By its very nature, operating a ship at sea is a challenging activity. To undertake tasks such as wave height monitoring, using cranes in bad weather, or determining where a ship is using dynamic positioning, it is necessary to measure roll, pitch, yaw, and heave motion. This is where the Motion Reference Unit (MRUs) comes in, and KONGSBERG has been leading the field for 25 years.
The MRUs are suitable for any offshore operation requiring attitude determination and motion compensation. Kongsberg’s motion sensor family provides high precision motion measurement in all dynamic environments. They cover all Marine activities from small hydrographic vessels to large vessels and facilities.

Kongsberg’s MRUs use a solid state gyroscope and accelerometer to provide real-time motion measurement with high dynamic accuracy. State-of-the-art design, construction and assembly inside the MRUs provide extremely high reliability in the most demanding Marine environments.
The integration of technical art and application
There have been many different versions of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based gyroscopes over the past 25 years, and the constant focus on innovation and ingenuity has resulted in ever-increasing cost performance. As a result, today’s MEMs-based gyroscopes challenge “easy wear” mechanical gyroscopes as well as those based on fiber optic (FOG) technology. Optimized for high-end applications in the KONGSBERG Motion Reference Unit(MRU) product family, the KONGSBERG gyroscope is a good example of MEMs-based gyroscope design, demonstrating a new level of performance for the technology.
