Recently, Mr. Mehta, global President of ABB’s Motion Control Division and member of the ABB Group’s Executive Committee, visitetor and generator factory in Shanghai. He affirmed the development achievements of ABB’s business in China and was full of expectations for greater development prospects in the future.
China is actively promoting the implementation of the “dual carbon” goal, and scientific and technological innovation is a key engine to support and lead green and high-quality development. Mehta said in an interview with Xinhua, “I am very happy to see that China is rapidly moving towards an efficient and low-carbon society. From new energy efficiency standards to feedback from recent customer surveys, Chinese industries are taking action to make low-carbon more than just words, but a real reality. This trend is highly aligned with our business direction. ABB is continuously increasing its research and development efforts to develop more energy-efficient products and solutions to support China’s further acceleration towards a low-carbon future.”
Innovation is the core of ABB to maintain market competitiveness, and it is also one of ABB’s key investment areas in China. Over the years, ABB China’s motion control business has continued to improve its local research and development capabilities, and currently has about 450 R&D personnel in Beijing and Shanghai, leading or participating in the development of many innovative products including frequency converters, cloud connection control panels, high voltage motors, and low voltage motors. In 2022, ABB’s North Asia R&D headquarters for Drives and Controls was completed in Beijing, which responds to market demand more quickly and efficiently with customized products and services to support long-term business growth. Previously, ABB also established a Nanjing servo Product research and development center to focus on the development of a new generation of servo products.
ABB Motion Control’s innovative strength and technological leadership in the Chinese market have been widely recognized. In 2022, Beijing ABB Electric Drive System Co., Ltd. became the first batch of foreign R&D centers in Beijing recognized by Beijing Science and Technology Commission and Zhongguancun Science and Technology Park Management Committee; ABB High Voltage Motor Co., Ltd. and Shanghai ABB Motor Co., Ltd. located in Shanghai Minhang Development Zone have been recognized as foreign R&D centers by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce; These three companies have also been selected as “Top 100 of China’s Electrical Industry” and won industry awards.
With the mission of “driving the world and promoting energy conservation”, ABB Motion Control enables various industries to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction by developing and providing innovative inverters, motors, generators, and integrated digital transmission chain solutions, which are fully aligned with the vision of China’s “dual carbon” goal. By the end of 2022, ABB has delivered more than 11 million inverters and high-efficiency motors in China, saving more than 510 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, equivalent to reducing about 500 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and saving electricity equivalent to the total electricity consumption of Shanghai in three years.
At the same time, ABB aims to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030, and achieve sustainable development through the use of renewable energy generation, improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions. Not long ago, the “green factory” Beijing ABB Electric Drive System Co., Ltd. and its Nanjing Servo Research and development center were awarded the “carbon neutral” certificate by Beijing Green Exchange Co., LTD., marking the realization of ABB drive’s operational carbon neutral goal in 2022; Two ABB companies, ABB High Voltage Motor Co., Ltd. and Shanghai ABB Motor Co., Ltd. were selected as “Zero carbon benchmark factories” by the Shanghai Economic and Information Technology Commission, and are achieving the Group’s sustainable development goals ahead of schedule.
