ABB’s Electrical Innovation Week kicked off with a comprehensive focus on energy transformation and launched more than 20 innovative products such as revolutionary DC solid-state circuit breakers
Maaten announced that ABB Electric will continue to invest $100 million in China in the next three years for low-carbon technology research and development, smart manufacturing upgrades and low-carbon industrial chain empowerment
ABB Electrical Innovation Week 2024 was held in Xiamen on January 9 with the theme of “Energy Future, Innovation-driven”, which aims to interpret the opportunities and challenges of the energy future, reveal the key to the energy revolution, and point out the development path of energy transformation. Through forums, keynote speeches, product solution release and display, the event fully demonstrated ABB’s key role in energy transformation, focused on hot topics in green energy, green buildings, green industry, green data center and other industries, and built key scenarios in key industries with new power systems as the carrier to accelerate the implementation of digital value. Driving the transition to a net-zero energy future.
Morten Wierod, global President of ABB’s electrical business, said: “We continue to capture opportunities for growth in the context of accelerating global electrification. The growing quest for a low-carbon future means greater energy efficiency, more renewable energy and a more resilient power grid. In China, we are committed to helping our customers decarbonize while maintaining business growth through innovation, collaboration, partnerships and innovative technologies.
ABB continues to be optimistic about China’s future development, and Marten announced that over the next three years, the Electrical division will continue to invest $100 million in China to enhance technology research and development to support the energy transition. ABB will invest in laboratory facilities and test equipment to further expand local research and development resources, develop new technologies and products for the future, and better help customers and partners improve energy efficiency. At the same time, through the upgrade of intelligent manufacturing, to provide higher quality products and solutions to the Chinese market and even overseas markets.
Innovative technologies enable the energy revolution
ABB is a pioneer and industry pioneer in power systems, inventing and creating numerous products and technologies. These include the world’s first micro circuit breaker with thermal magnetic technology, high voltage direct current transmission technology, isolation circuit breaker and air/gas insulation hybrid switchgear, UFES fast grounding system, native IEC61850 relay protection, the world’s first insulated gas “relocatable” medium voltage switchgear, laminated bus concept of low voltage switchgear, solid state circuit breaker, etc. And being the first to put them into commercial use.
During Innovation Week, the world’s first IEC 60947-2 compliant SACE Infinitus solid-state circuit breaker was officially launched, enabling safe and energy-efficient DC power systems. Solid-state circuit breakers switch on and off power supply circuits through semiconductor power electronics. ABB solid-state circuit breakers detect and respond to short-circuit faults 100 times faster and have a service life 100 times longer than conventional circuit breakers. No energy is released during the breaking process, and the chance of dangerous arcing is reduced to almost zero, protecting the safety of personnel and equipment. This follows ABB’s revolutionary solid-state technology concept in 2019.
This year, ABB will launch a series of celebrations for the “100th anniversary of the micro Circuit Breaker” to add momentum and vitality to continuous innovation. At the same time, the 1 million ring cabinet will also be offline in Beijing this year, becoming a model for the improvement of local large-scale intelligent manufacturing capacity to meet the needs of localhgear.
Zhao Yongzhan, president of ABB Electric China, said that for more than 140 years, ABB’s innovative technology has played a leading and driving role in every industrial revolution. ABB continues to devote itself to technological innovation, promote the transformation and landing of innovative achievements, take electrification, digitalization and automation as the core, and use new technologies to help users meet the challenges brought by energy transformation, enabling the establishment of new energy systems and new power systems.
At present, in the context of the “double carbon” goal, distributed energy scale development, the distribution network is facing the dual challenges of efficient consumption of new energy and reliable supply of load, and the distribution network form needs to be upgraded. Compared with AC power distribution system, DC power distribution system has fewer conversion links, high energy utilization rate and good power quality, which is one of the important technical means to transform power supply mode, improve power efficiency and promote energy reform. At this Innovation Week, ABB focused on sharing “Welcome to the world of DC” – Smart DC low voltage DC distribution solution. Including tailor-made Gerapid DC circuit breaker, Emax DC air circuit breaker, Tmax XT DC moulded case circuit breaker, DC isolation switch OT/OS, DC micro circuit breaker S200 series, DC EWA switch panel, KNX DC intelligent lighting solution, etc., the above products are widely used in various industries. Especially energy storage, photovoltaic, UPS battery, electric drive ship, rail transit, construction and other fields.
Four major industry forums, Energy, Construction, industry and data center, were held during Innovation Week to discuss future opportunities and challenges in the context of the energy transition, introduce ABB’s innovative technologies and solutions, and share industry successful practices.
