Amazon Cloud Technologies and Siemens will open a cloud edge collaboration, leveraging cloud services such as Amazon Cloud Technologies artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics, Internet of Things and storage, as well as Siemens’ industrial edge solutions to empower manufacturing customers. Based on the cloud-edge collaborative solution, Siemens Automation Chengdu plant has successfully built an automatic sorting system for industrial waste. Relying on Siemens Edge solutions and Amazon Cloud Technology’s artificial intelligence and machine learning services, the system has significantly increased the sorting accuracy from 70% to more than 97%, and the classification accuracy of hazardous waste from 90% to nearly 100%.
Cloud edge collaboration is the organic combination of cloud computing and edge computing. With the application of edge devices in industrial scenarios, the integration of cloud computing and edge computing to improve the digitization and intelligence of factories has become the only way to digitize the manufacturing industry.
The cloud edge collaborative technology framework, jointly launched by the two parties, integrates Siemens Industrial Edge solutions and Amazon Cloud Technology’s artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics, Internet of things and storage cloud services. Siemens Industrial Edge solutions include edge devices, edge applications and edge management platforms, providing a complete solution for data to the cloud. The Siemens Industrial Edge processes large volumes of data locally in real time, with low data latency and local compliance requirements. IT also provides rich on-premises applications, including data processing, data visualization, and data transfer to the cloud or IT infrastructure. The Siemens Industrial Edge digital platform transfers relevant data to the cloud, making full use of the cloud’s flexible and efficient computing and storage resources to achieve rapid information sharing and complex computational reasoning and machine learning training. With the Siemens Cloud Connector, customers can easily connect to Amazon Cloud Technologies’ cloud services. In addition, Siemens Industrial edge equipment also supports the development kit (SDK) provided by Amazon Cloud Technology to achieve cloud,
edge and end collaboration.
Building on the Siemens Industrial Edge solution, customers can use cloud services such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics, Internet of Things and storage from Amazon Cloud Technologies to transmit, store, process and analyze massive amounts of data generated on industrial sites in real time. Customers can build a data lake based on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). Through services such as Amazon IoT Core and Amazon IoT SiteWise, customers transmit data from sensors to a cloud data lake after it is pre-processed or desensitized locally, solving problems such as limited storage capacity of edge devices. Process data in cloud data lakes with Amazon Glue (a fully managed ETL service) and analyze streaming data sources in real time with Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR, a managed Hadoop framework) to support big data analytics. Through Amazon SageMaker machine Learning services, customers combine machine learning with traditional industrial devices to train and reason machine learning models in the cloud.
Combined with Siemens’ industrial edge solutions and Amazon Cloud Technology’s leading cloud services, manufacturing customers can not only leverage the advantages of low latency and data localization of edge computing, but also take advantage of rich cloud-native services to better deploy quality inspection, data analysis, predictive maintenance and other solutions to promote the digital transformation of manufacturing. Amazon Cloud Technology will also have a professional team such as a solution center to support customers to achieve cloud-edge collaboration.
Based on cloud edge collaboration, Siemens Automation Chengdu plant has built an automatic sorting system for industrial waste with machine learning as the core. In the factory waste recycling line, Siemens Industrial edge solutions collect waste data in a safe and reliable way and upload it to the cloud. In the cloud, machine learning model is trained through Amazon cloud technology, and the trained algorithm model is sent to the edge end, where the edge end equipment analyzes the picture information of the waste for identification and classification. The sorting accuracy rate is increased from about 70% to more than 97%, and the classification accuracy rate of harmful waste is increased from 90% to nearly 100%, and the sorting process is gradually realized without manual intervention.
