Description
A relay is an electric or electromechanical switch that consists of an electromagnet,
armature, spring, and a set of electrical contacts. The electromagnetic switch is operated
by a small current, and a large current is switched on or off by releasing or retracting the armature
contact, thus cutting or closing the circuit. Relays are necessary when there must be electrical
isolation between the controlled circuit and the control circuit,

This makes it possible to allow relatively small currents to influence and control much larger currents. Like, the sensor can act as a control input to the relay, and when it is activated, a greater current flows to the device. For example, light or light sensors can be assigned to control lights outside so that when it gets dark outside, the light sensor activates a relay that acts as a light switch.
