Description
The fourth generation DCS system almost all adopt IEC61131-3 standard for configuration software design. The standard was originally provided for PLC language design. At the same time, some DCS (such as Honeywell’s PKS) also directly use mature PLC as a control station. Most fourth-generation DCS can be integrated with small and medium-sized PLC as the underlying control unit. Today’s small and micro PLCS not only have all the basic logic computing functions of large PLCS in the past, but also advanced computing, communication and motion control can be realized.
DCS includes FCS functionality and is further decentralized
For some time in the past, some scholars and manufacturers have put DCS and FCS in opposition. In fact, the real promotion of FCS progress is still the world’s major DCS manufacturers. Therefore, DCS will not be replaced by FCS, but DCS will incorporate FCS and achieve true DCS. Now that prediction is being borne out by reality. All fourth-generation DCS include various forms of fieldbus interfaces that can support a variety of standard fieldbus instruments, actuators, and so on. In addition, the DCS also changed the original cabinet rack mounted I/O modules, relatively centralized control station structure, replaced by further decentralized I/O modules (rail mounting), or miniaturized I/O components (can be installed on site) or small and medium-sized PLC.
An important advantage of distributed control is logical segmentation. Engineers can easily assign the control functions of different devices to different appropriate control units according to equipment, so that operators can modify, install and debug the modular functions of a single control unit according to needs. Another advantage is that each control unit is distributed and installed near the controlled device, which saves cables and can improve the control speed of the device. Some DCS also include distributed HMI local operation stations, where people and machines will organically integrate together to complete the various operations of an intelligent factory. Examples include Emerson’s DeltaV, Foxboro’s A2 small module structure, Ovation’s decentralized module structure, and so on.
