Casing expansion is an important displacement measurement parameter of turbine monitoring instrument. Housing expansion (sometimes called frame expansion) refers to the thermal expansion of the housing during machine start-up or online operation. The housing expansion sensor system is usually installed on the basis of the fixed end of the turbine housing to provide the expansion information of the housing relative to the foundation.
Housing expansion parameters should be measured using dual sensors. This measurement method can show the position of the sliding foot of the housing at any time. When one leg is obstructed or stuck, it will cause deformation of the housing and damage to the machine. Dual housing expansion sensor systems, when used in conjunction with 3500 or 3300 monitors, can provide alarm information for such situations. The high temperature dual housing expansion sensor system is only compatible with 3500/45 displacement monitors.

Casing expansion measurements can help the user determine whether the thermal expansion difference of the machine exceeds the expected value. This is a starting parameter, thus ensuring that the housing and rotor expand at almost the same rate. If the thermal expansion rate is different, it will cause internal friction between the rotating parts and the stationary parts of the machine.

The working principle of the casing expansion sensor:
The housing expansion sensor system uses an LVDT to measure the thermal expansion of the housing. The LVDT has a probe rod attached to the machine. When the housing expands, the probe rod moves within the LVDT, causing the LVDT signal to change. The signal is adjusted and output to the monitor for display and alarm.
