Based on its structure, the FBM242 is classified into two types: monolithic and modular.
(1) Integrated FBM242 The integrated FBM242 integrates the power supply, CPU, and I/O ports in one chassis. It features compact structure, small size, and low price. Small FBM242 typically use this monolithic construction. The integrated FBM242 consists of a base unit (also known as a host) and an extension unit with different I/O points. The basic unit has a CPU, I/O interface, an expansion port connected to the I/O extension unit, and an interface connected to the programmer or EPROM writer. The expansion unit only has I/O, power, etc., and no CPU. The basic unit and the extension unit are usually connected by flat cables. The integrated FBM242 can also be equipped with special functional units, such as analog units, position control units, etc., to expand its functions.

(2) Modular FBM242 The modular FBM242 combines the components of the FBM242 into separate modules, such as the CPU module, I/O module, power module (some of which are included in the CPU module), and various function modules. Modular FBM242 consists of a frame or substrate and various modules. Modules are mounted on sockets in the frame or substrate. The modular FBM242 is characterized by flexible configuration and the ability to select systems of different sizes as required, and easy assembly for expansion and maintenance. Large and medium FBM242 generally adopt modular structure.
There are also FBM242s that combine integral and modular features to form the so-called stacked FBM242. The stacked FBM242 also has independent modules for CPU, power, and I/O interfaces, but they are connected by cables, and each module can be stacked layer by layer. In this way, not only can the system be flexibly configured, but also can be made small.
