The GE Fanuc IC693DNS201 module is a powerful communications module used with PACSystems RX3i components and programmable logic controllers from GE Series 90-30. The module is intended for communication on the DeviceNet network and it operates in the slave mode as a network server. The IC693DNS201 module is equipped with an RS-232 serial port that is used for firmware upgrades which are very important for the proper operation of the unit. For example, the Bus of the DeviceNet module can use an external power source and sometimes it requires cycling of power to the programmable controller when the power is turned off and a firmware upgrade to both the master and slave modules on the network can resolve such an issue. The RS-232 serial port has 9 pins and a male D-connector that allow for a secured connection.
The GE Fanuc IC693DNS201 is a communications module. Specifically, it is the DeviceNet Slave Module, which only operates as a network server, or ‘slave’. The IC693DNS201 is able to exchange data automatically, sending and receiving messages from a master on the same network. Users can install the IC693DNS201 module in the main rack of an RX3i system or else in an expansion rack of a Series 90-30 system. This can be done in the main rack of a 90-30 system. Each module in the system is counted as a single node within the DeviceNet network. Each module’s server function can be configured to a maximum of two DeviceNet I/O Messaging connections. It can also be configured for explicit messaging.

The IC693DNS201 module has three DeviceNet-compliant LEDs. These show the status of operations and communications. There is a 9-pin male D-connector, known as the RS-232 serial port. This is used to connect a PC for firmware upgrades. A removable spring-clamp terminal is known as the DeviceNet connector. This connector provides bus continuity. It may be removed from the communications module without causing any disruption to bus operation. This module can handle bus communications at all standard DeviceNet data rates. It has a maximum of 255 bytes input data transfer and also 255 bytes output data transfer. Users must note they will not be able to use a Hand-Held Programmer to configure this module, nor is it compatible with LogicMaster Programming software, Control or VersaPro software.
The IC693DNS201 DeviceNet communications module provides advanced fault reporting and it supports PLC registers. The module is mounted in the rack of the system and it can be installed into any slot, with the exception of slots 0 and 1. The IC693DNS201 module also supports up to 2 DeviceNet I/O messaging connections and it supports explicit messaging which is required for some applications. The module is made for handling standard data rates and it can transfer data up to 255 bytes either for input or output. The IC693DNS201 module has a typical backplane current consumption rating of 450 milliAmps at a voltage of 5 Volts DC. The specified operating temperature range for the Series 90-30 modules is 0 to 60 degrees Celsius or 32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit while their storage temperature range is -40 to 85 degrees Celsius or -40 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit.
