GPIB-140A Bus Extender, GPIB bus extender—GPIB-140A can extend the cable of GPIB system by one kilometer without affecting the integrity of GPIB and without modifying the software. The accessory uses buffered transfer technology for data transfer rates up to 1.1 Mb/s (IEEE 488.1) or 2.8 Mb/s (HS488). The GPIB-140A can also increase the maximum number of GPIB devices in a GPIB system from 15 to 26.
The Nickel GPIB-140A (Part Numbers: 777997-01, 777997-02, 777997-03, 777997-04, 777997-05, and 777997-06) is a GPIB bus extender. Such a device easily eliminates the restrictions related to cable length and device loading imposed by the IEEE 488 standard. This GPIB-140A is fully compatible with IEEE 488.1 and IEEE 488.2 standards. According to the IEEE 488 standard, the total length of any GPIB system cannot exceed 20 meters. The GPIB extender can reach a total distance of 1 km without any modification and without affecting the integrity of the user’s GPIB system.

This GPIB extender can support up to 1 km of fiber optic cable. The Nickel GPIB-140A comes with a buffered transfer technology, making this model the fastest GPIB bus extender available. Using this model, users can achieve speeds above 2.8 Mbytes when working under the HS488 protocol. This GPIB expander can be easily deployed and requires no additional hardware. In a typical case, one end of the computer equipment is connected to a cable extender. At the far end, the GPIB instrument is connected to a similar cable extension. Then, the two cable extenders are interconnected by a fiber optic cable.
Each NI GPIB-140A continuously monitors GPIB activity and converts GPIB signals to parallel or serial signals for transmission to the receiver expander. Receive expanders receive serial or parallel signals from transmit expanders and convert them to IEEE 488 signals. The Ni GPIB-140A requires no modification to existing software applications as it is software transparent.
