Technical Requirements:

On GSM networks, the UICC contains a SIM application, while on UMTS networks, it is the USIM application. A UICC may contain multiple applications, enabling the same smart card to be used on GSM and UMTS networks and providing storage for contacts and other applications. With appropriate mobile terminals, it can also use a USIM application to access a GSM network and a SIM application to access a UMTS network. UICC smart card includes CPU, ROM, RAM, EEPROM and I/O circuits. Early versions consisted of a full-size smart card (85 x 54 mm, ISO/IEC 7810ID-1). A smaller version for smaller mobile phones appeared shortly after, with the card tailored to 25 × 15 mm (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-000).
Thanks to the standardization of the card slots, users can easily transfer their wireless accounts and phone numbers from one phone to another. This will also transfer their phone book and text messages. Similarly, users can usually change the carrier by inserting the new carrier’s UICC card into their existing phone. However, this is not always possible because some carriers use SIM lock technology on the phones they sell to prevent customers from using SIM cards from other carriers.
