Technical Description 1746-A7：
The Allen-Bradley 1746-A7 has a built-in modular processor, communication adapter module, and input and output modules. The seven slots inside the chassis are part of the SLC 500 modular chassis, providing flexibility in system configuration. In a modular system, each case needs its own power supply. The SLC 500 1746-A7 modular chassis can be used as a standalone unit in one system or in conjunction with one or two other local chassis. Chassis interconnection cables can be used to construct a variety of chassis configurations and extend signal lines. This can create up to a total of 30 I/O slots. Use different lengths of 1746-C9 cable or 1746-C16 cable to connect the chassis vertically. Both cables have rigid, non-bendable shrink wrap to remove stress when connecting the modules up and down. For a horizontal layout, use the 1746-C7 cable. Do not use any other cables for setup. Longer cables may affect the integrity of data communications and lead to unsafe operations.
A ground connection from the 1746-A7 chassis to the ground bus can reduce resistance. Do not place one lug directly on top of another when grounding. Compression causes these connections to loosen. The 1746-A7 has A maximum backplane current of 5.1 V DC at 10A and 24 V DC at 2.88A. For best performance, work in temperatures ranging from 0 degrees Celsius to 60 degrees Celsius (32 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit) and 5% to 95% relative humidity (no condensation).
The 1746-A7 is an SLC 500 chassis that houses SLC 500 modules, such as SLC processors, SLC IO modules, SLC communication adapters, and professional modules.
The 1746-A7 features seven (7) slots, which can be expanded to 21 modules by connecting two (2) more cases from the main case where the controller is located. This is achieved by using interconnect cables with part numbers 1746-C9, 1746-C7 and other interconnect cables of different lengths. Each case requires a separate power supply, but only one SLC 500 processor is required. The processor should be installed in the main box. An extension chassis is considered a remote I/O rack.
The SLC 500 was fitted with other models of chassis, including the 1746-A13, 1746-A10, and 1746-A4. All of these cases, including the 1746-A7, had an embedded electronic circuit connected to a power slot. This circuit is used as a backplane to distribute power to the inserted module. It also acts as an information exchange between the processor and the module. Therefore, the SLC 500 modular controller cannot operate without a chassis.
In other terms, a case may also be called a rack or backplane. In typical applications, the case is mounted horizontally. If the system requires more than one chassis, side-by-side installation is also permitted, provided that accurate panel space is available and the recommended spacing of 7.7 cm to 10.2 cm or 3.0 to 4.0 inches is maintained.
