IP-Quadrature provides a high density, cost-effective, and flexible implementation of four orthogonal decoder channels. Channels can also be used as universal counters. Four independent channels provide 24-bit resolution, programmable mode, programmable polarity, interrupt capability, differential or single-ended (RS-422 or TTL/CMOS) input, dynamic read capability, and a count frequency of 0 to 10 MHz. Orthogonal encoders are popular sensors that provide accurate and low-cost incremental motion detection. The most common are shaft encoders, which provide 512 to 2048 counts per revolution. They are also commonly used as linear encoders with resolutions as low as 0.005 in. They are available in almost any length. Most encoders today are optical, using a molded assembly consisting of a pair of light-emitting diodes, a lens, a photoelectric sensor, and simple electronic components. For rotational motion, the assembly senses alternating opaque and clear lines on the rotating wheel. For linear motion, alternate lines can be on the stationary rod while the sensor assembly moves, and vice versa. This offsets the LED and light sensor by about half a line width, allowing the direction of motion to be sensed by looking at the relative phase of the two outputs. A typical orthogonal encoder output is a pair of digital logic signals with a nominal phase difference of 90°. Some encoders also provide an “indexed” pulse output per revolution to provide absolute position information. Most modern encoders use +5 volts and provide CMOS/TTL logic output and/or RS-422 differential logic output. If possible, it is recommended to use the RS-422 because of its inherent disturbance resistance and long-distance transmission capability. TTL logic levels should generally be limited to cables less than 10 feet in length. Orthogonal encoders are available from Hewlett-Packard, US Digital, and other sources. The common input structure allows differential inputs from line drivers (RS-422 levels) or single-ended logic level inputs (” TTL “) directly from most sensors. Programmable TTL resistive terminals provide flexible, high-quality signal terminations. Each channel has three inputs. For normal orthogonal operations, the two orthogonal inputs are called X and y. These inputs are sometimes referred to as the A and B wires of the encoder. The X and Y inputs are usually driven at a 90° phase difference. Each channel also has a control input called z. Its functionality is programmable, but if used, it is usually used as an index or latch input. Each channel has a programmable pre-divider that can be set to work in X1, X2 or X4 mode. Full support vector interrupt. Interrupts can be masked separately. Optional criteria include a borrow interrupt and a match interrupt (compare). RS-422 differential input lines are usually terminated with 120ω resistance. If desired, the user can remove these socket resistance networks or replace them with different values. Each channel consists of a programmable input section, a 24-bit increment/decrement counter module, a 24-bit capture/match register, and a 24-bit output latch. Output latches allow accurate “real time” reading of orthogonal position values. The capture/match register can be used as a hardware “capture” register to record exact mechanical positions, or to provide interrupts for arbitrary programmable orthogonal position values. The all-CMOS design itself is low power. A maximum of 16 orthogonal channels can be realized in a host system slot
