The S800 I/O is an integrated, distributed, and modular I/O process system for communicating with parent controllers and PLCs on industry standard buses. The TB840 modem is the optical fiber interface of the optical fiber module bus. TB840A is used in a redundant configuration where each module is connected to a different fiber module bus line, but connected to the same electrical module bus.

Module bus modems have an electrical interface and an optical module bus interface, which are logically the same bus. Up to 12 I/O modules can be connected to the electrical module bus, and 7 clusters can be connected to the fiber module bus. The fiber interface is used for local distribution of I/O clusters and requires more than 12 I/O modules in an I/O station.
