Technical Requirements 1786-RPFM:
1786-RPFM is an Allen-Bradley ControlNet attachment. The module is a panel mount/DIN rail mount device that is functionally equivalent to the ControlNet Modular Repeater mid-range fiber module.
The module is used to convert Cox cables into fiber optic media with a maximum distance of 3,000 meters or 9,843 feet. Fiber optic links provide isolation between connecting nodes and improve immunity to noise and electrical interference. The fiber link of this module requires the use of 62.5/125 micron cable, OM1 multi-mode cable.
The 1786-RPFM is used with the 1786-RPA ControlNet repeater adapter module. A 1786-RPA can use up to four (4) 1786-RPFMs. In addition, mixing repeater types is allowed when assembling the ControlNet network. The maximum allowable total power consumption is 1.6A@5V DC without damaging the module repeater adapter and nearby modules.
When used in conjunction with point-to-point or relay line topologies, the 1786-RPFM is well suited for extending the total length of one (1) control network segment. It can also be used to build networks from one point to multiple directions when planning star and ring topologies. In addition, these fiber optic converters and repeater modules can be used in applications traversing industrial sites and hazardous areas with high levels of electrical noise. The maximum attenuation of optical cable shall not be higher than 13.3 dB. Typically, cables with a wavelength of 1300 nm have attenuation of less than 1.5 dB/km.
RSnetWorx can be used to configure control network properties and verify that the system being assembled meets control network requirements.
The device has a current consumption of 400 mA, an operating wavelength of 1300 nm and a attenuation level of 13.3 dB. The device is designed to address mid-range applications, with each segment between the two ControlNet fiber Repeaters not exceeding 3,000 meters in length, but the maximum length of that segment depends on the fiber quality, number of connectors, and number of splices. When installing this repeater series, it is recommended that it be done by a trained expert, as its installation requires appropriate validation testing. In addition, the Allen Bradley 1786-RPFM unit shall be fitted in a suitable housing to maximize module operation. Also, make sure that tools such as a screwdriver can reach the inside of the case to prevent damage from live parts.
This 1786-RPFM ControlNet unit is primarily used for creating star topologies, ring topologies, extending network lengths, and for converting copper coaxial cable to fiber media. The Allen Bradley 1786-RPFM unit provides excellent isolation between nodes and is less susceptible to noisy environments than other copper media. It is also used to power various repeater modules. They all have a status indicator that the user can interpret to communicate the failure and check the data for errors.
