Technical Description 1746-P4:

The 1746-P4 is an SLC 500 power module that provides a midplane power supply for the local chassis, expansion modules, or remote I/O chassis. By providing a backplane power supply, modules connected to chassis slots become operational and can be recognized by SLC processors.

The power supply is required to have an input voltage of 85 to 132/170 to 250 volts AC and a frequency of 47 to 63 Hz. It also provides 24VDC output, which can be used to power external devices. You are not advised to use 24VDC output as the power supply for the output module. Doing so will make troubleshooting difficult, even for individual modules, because the system must first be powered off, which means the entire SLC 500 controller rack must be stopped.

All power supplies in the SLC 500 product family have a feature called hold time. Hold time refers to the ability of the processor to continue processing logic when the input power of the PSU drops below the nominal level. If the power supply continues to experience low voltage levels and the hold time expires, the processor stops processing the logic. Once the input voltage is restored to the normal level, normal operation is resumed.

With 1746 P4, the specific hold time is 20 ms (full load)3000 ms (no load). The power supply is listed as an industrial control device at UL and is CSA certified as A hazardous site process control device for Class 1, Zone 2, Group A, B, C, and D.
